Shards of honour5/24/2023 Cordelia’s stories act as an introduction to the world of Barrayaran politics, and provide a non-spoilery background for the uninitiated. This advice goes against publication order, but both novels center on Cordelia Naismith, the mother of the great Miles Vorkosigan, the protagonist of other books in Bujold’s series. Once again, I am just not cool enough to fit in with the in-crowd.īujold advises Vorkosigan newbies to begin the series with Shards of Honor (1986) and Barrayar (1991), which is sometimes combined into the 1996 omnibus Cordelia’s Honor. I really wanted to love these two novels, just so I could identify with the legions of Lois McMaster Bujold fans who buoy her consistent status as the second-most nominated, and second-most winning, author of Hugo Best Novel Awards.īut, alas, I remain unimpressed. So much miming goes on to make the audience see things, not through words but through visible actions. One wonders how a half-literate, irresponsible primary school teacher can accomplish all that. He speaks of things and ideas that even the simple village belle, Sidi, finds ridiculous.įor example, Lakunle boasts of his personal plans to bring massive infrastructural development and enlightenment to what, in his opinion, is a rather backward village of Ilujinle. For example, Lakunle gets out of a class of young children only to woo a woman and even kiss her. His mannerisms are often on the side of the extreme. Lakunle’s protestations of civilization are sometimes very laughable. Below are some attributes of comedy found in the play. Remember that the hallmark of comedy is humour (and a happy ending, of course). The Lion and the Jewel is a comedy in many ways. Now that we’ve seen enough of the themes and characters in The Lion and the Jewel, our next task is to scrutinize the dramatic techniques in Wole Soyinka’s play, The Lion and the Jewel.
